On October 6, 1930, Soror L. Pearl Mitchell, Great Lakes Regional Director, met at the home of Soror Elizabeth C. Mann in Columbus, Ohio to charter the Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  Sorors listed on the charter are: Cecilia Chancellor (Nu), Thelma A. Jackson (Theta), Elizabeth C. Mann (Theta), Octavia J. Martin (Theta), Vernon J. Reid (Theta), Clara Savoy (Nu), Eva Jane Smith (Theta), Lucretia Peters, Julianette Allen, and Eva W. Manuel.

Octavia J. Martin served as the first Basileus of Alpha Sigma Omega.  She was elected Second Supreme Anti-Basileus at the December 1930 Boule that was held in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Other members of Alpha Sigma Omega who have served as International Officers are Juanita Davis Webster, elected Great Lakes Regional Director in 1941, Emma Lilly Henderson, elected Great Lakes Regional Director in 1988 and appointed Executive Director in 1996, Berna Rhodes-Ford, elected Second Supreme Anti-Basileus in 1992, Olympia A. Coles, elected Undergraduate Member-At-Large in 1998 and Rachel Ashburn Mallory, elected Great Lakes Regional Director in 1998, re-elected in 2000 and appointed Supreme Parliamentarian in 2002.
